Abstract
Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare neoplasm. Usually, it is found in children younger than one year of age. A five-month-old infant with a slow-growing mass in the left retroauricular region is presented. In concordance with brain CT scan findings a biopsy was first performed, histopathology confirmed TNMI by H&E staining and immunochemistry (the tumor was positive to melanin, HMBA4, enolase, synaptophysin, AE1/AE3, vimentin, CK7; and was negative to ferrous staining, common leukocyte antigen, S100, miogenin, CK20, CD57, Prussian blue and actin), Ki-67 labeling index was 5 per cent and the p53 was negative; each one was confirmed by electron microscopy. Three months later a whole resection by craniotomy and partial mastoidectomy was performed. The postoperative course was unremarkable.
Previous reports state that mastoidal location is unusual. Physicians and specially neurosurgeons should have into account this lesion in children with a firm mastoid mass.
