Resumen

Con un estimado de 44 millones de norteamericanos afectados, la osteoporosis, una patología asociada a la edad, se está convirtiendo en un problema de salud pública. La complicación más frecuente en pacientes con osteoporosis es el desarrollo de fracturas de los cuerpos vertebrales (FCV). Las fracturas vertebrales están asociadas a un aumento de la mortalidad, seguramente por cambios en la función pulmonar, inmovilización prolongada y deterioro de la calidad de vida. Durante la última década se han publicado más de 500 artículos acerca del tratamiento mínimamente invasivo de las FCV, llamado vertebroplastia. Este procedimiento consiste en la inyección percutánea de cemento óseo sintético para estabilizar la fractura. La baja incidencia de complicaciones y la rápida recuperación de los pacientes explican el entusiasmo de la comunidad médica por esta técnica.
