Abstract

Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality all over the world. Stroke can be ischemic or hemorrhagic. The mainstay of treatment of ischemic stroke is the intravenous administration of rt-PA. Patients who receive intravenous rt-PA are more likely to resume independent activities of daily living after treatment. However, not all patients are good candidates for this treatment. We discuss in this brief review other treatment modalities including intra-arterial thrombolysis, and intracranial angioplasty and stenting. We also address the current indications for treatment of ruptured cerebral aneurysms in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage
