Abstract

Relation of sleep and epilepsy can be analyzed from several points of view: the differential diagnosis of the paroxistics events that happen during sleep; the effect of in electroencephalogram and epilepsy; the effect of the epilepsy in the sleep and disorders that appears in patients with epilepsy. The epileptic events that can be confused with disorders of the are the partial complex crises of the frontal or temporal lobes and the epileptic nonconvulsive status. In order to differentiate these episodes a careful history is needed, and some test. Sleep produces epileptiforme activity in a third of patients with epilepsy and until in a 90% in epilepsies related to waking up. The treatment of the epilepsy with antiepileptics can affect the architecture of the sleep. Benzodiazepines and barbiturics can diminish the latency REM. Carbamazepine reduces to the REM. Fenitoin can increase stages 1 and 2 of sleep, but the efficiency of the diminishes.
