Abstract

Recent effort in emergency departments and in stroke centers for the management of the patient with acute cerebral infarction emphasizes the use of trombolytic drugs and neuroprotective medications. These therapies are successful only if the diagnosis can be rapidly established. In this article we review the utility of multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which is sensitive to early pathophysiological abnormalities resulting from an acute cerebral infarction (Acta Neurol Colomb 2006;22:55-65).
