Abstract
Epileptic seizures are frequent in elderly people; their seizures have sometimes different clinical manifestations. They also have risk for status epilepticus and it can be the first epilepsy manifestation. In this group of patients, drugs metabolism and side effects are different when compared with younger patients. It is also important when prescribing an antiepileptic drug, keeps in mind that most of the older people have another disease and are taking more than one medication. This principle applies when status epilepticus treatment is given to an elderly patient who also has another comorbility. New intravenous antiepileptic drugs like valproic acid, levetiracetam and laco- samide can be a choice in the status epilepticus treatment when the conventional medications are not indicated because of side effects; or when the patient has another medical condition. These new antiepileptic drugs are also useful in status epilepticus treatment, of patient with other medical conditions like liver failure or chemotherapy.
