Abstract

Introduction: Post-stroke movement disorders (PSMD) represent an important proportion of secondary movement disorders. Although extrapyramidal structures are frequently affected by stroke, the incidence of post-stroke movement disorders is relatively low.

Purpose: We report the case of a patient who developed hemiballismus of ischemic vascular origin, caused by a lacunar infarct in the right lenticular and capsular region.

Case presentation: We present the case of an 82-year-old male who came to the emergency department with sudden-onset hyperkinetic movements on the left side of his body. Clinical history and diagnostic tests indicated a vascular origin.

Conclusions: The sudden onset of movement disorders should alert healthcare personnel to the possibility of an ongoing cerebrovascular event.
