Abstract
Although the region is a few years behind developed countries such as Italy, France or Japan, Latin America has been gaining unusual momentum in the process we call the demographic transition, whose main characteristic is the rapid aging of the population.
One of the most commonly used ways to see the magnitude of this change are population pyramids (1). Thus, in 1985, children under 5 years of age accounted for 13.4% of the total population; by 2020, this percentage had dropped to 8.6%; in the same period, the population over 65 years of age had gone from representing 4.4% of the total population to 8.5%. In other words, while in 1985 there were three children under 5 years of age for every older adult, today the ratio is one to one.
