Abstract
Introduction. In recent decades, remarkable progress has been made in the management of stroke, including the option of thrombolysis. Unfortunately, few patients present in time to be candidates acute treatment for several reasons, including lack of knowledge about symptoms, risk factors and appropriate behavior.
Objectives. Assess level of awareness of symptoms, risk factors and behavior to be adopted in the presence of stroke or TIA.
Materials and Methods. We conducted a descriptive and population-based cross section study in the city of Manizales, in over 50 years older people interviewed in health centers and public places, which were to be hypertensive or diabetic. Then were divided in two groups, attending special programs of hypertension or DM and those without. They filled out a form with open questions about the symptoms and spontaneous knowledge of risk factors (RF) and then select from a list correct or incorrect answers about symptoms or RF, that they knew. It was asked the behavior they will adopt in front stroke and TIA, and if they knew existence of a thrombolytic therapy.
Results. Were interviewed 213 people aged between 50 and 91 years (X 65.7 ± 12 years). Women accounted for 67.6% of the sample and 53% belonged to special programs. 65.3% didn't know symptoms and 54% no RF spontaneously. Hypertension was the most cited RF, while DM was in a low percentage. The level of ignorance was the same between younger and older than 65 years, or between those who attended to special programs. One third (65%) had obtained information from non- medical fonts, and there was not significant difference between those who were or were not in programs. Just 11.7% of people would go to emergency room if was suffering a stroke, the other adopted wrong behaviors. None of the respondents knew of the existence of fibrinolytic therapy.
Conclusion. There is alarming ignorance of stroke symptoms and RF in general population, even in high risk segments such as hypertensive and diabetics patients. Given this reality, it is urgent to improve the information provided to patients and community, both by health professionals as campaigns in mass media and other strategies that can be implemented in our country.
