Some neurological manifestations of the acquired immu- nodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in patient of the university hospital Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo in Neiva 2001 -2004

Abstract

OBJETIVE: to described some neurological complications of the HIV inpatients from internal medicine ward of the University Hospital “Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo” of Neiva city (Colombia) bewteen June 1 2001 to June 31 2004.

METHODS: retrospective descriptive study. Data was gathering from the statistical registrations of the Internal Medicine service, taking as population all the positive HIV patient that entered during the selected period. All clinical records were revised.

RESULTS: 86 patients, of those 67 (78%) presented neurological manifestations. 45 per cent were 31-40 years old, 22 per cent 21-30 years old. 89 per cent of the patients were men; with 53 per cent coming from Neiva.

The most frequent clinical manifestations were fever and headache (60 and 57 per cent). The main diagnoses were cerebral toxoplasmosis (37%), others neuroinfections (22%) and meningeal criptococosis in 16 per cent. The mortality was 45 per cent.

CONCLUSIONS: in the analyzed population, the most affected group was 31-40 years old. With a highest percentage of men. Cerebral toxoplasmosis was the predominant neuro infection.Mortality was high.
