Abstract

American tripanosomiasis or Chagas disease is still a frequent disease in our country. The principal affected organs are the heart and the central nervous system in the immunocompetent patient. In the immunocompromised patient affected organs are heart, colon and esophagus. Due to the importance of this human infection and the difficulty of its diagnostic we present the case of a young woman with a past clinical history of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome that presented seizures and focal deficit. The MRI showed a periventricular and caudate nucleus mass that needed a brain biopsy by stereotactic surgery for a complete diagnosis. During surgery, a cystic lesion was identified, drained and sent to the laboratory for analysis. The liquid sample presented some forms of Tripanosoma cruzi. Theis is the first report in our country of this clinical picture.
