Abstract
BACKGROUND. Patients who suffer from primary headache report frequently several anxiety symptoms. However, these symptoms have not been investigated yet among Colombian patients with migraine.
OBJECTIVE. To determine the prevalence of anxiety symptoms in patients with primary headache.
METHOD. Patients over eighteen year-old with primary headaches were evaluated. We excluded patients with mental disorder history and pregnant women. Anxiety symptoms were measured with Zung’s self report scale for anxiety.
RESULTS. We included 223 patients. The mean age was 37,0 years (SD 13.0); 82,5% were female, the average scholarity was 8,5 years; 63,2% were married; 56,1% had migraine, 43,5% tension-type headache and 0,4% cluster headache. The average score for anxiety was 52,9 (SD 8.8). Clinically significant anxiety symptoms were found in 62,8%. Scores and the prevalence of anxiety symptoms were significantly higher for women than men; but were independent of age, educational level, marital status, and headache type.
We conclude that the prevalence of anxiety symptoms is high in patients with primary headache.
