Resumen

INTRODUCCN:  aunque está demostrado que el tratamiento mejora la mortalidad, morbilidad y calidad de vida de los pacientes con síndrome de apnea/hipopnea obstructiva del sueño, la mayoría de los pacientes no es diagnosticado y por tanto no se les ofrece terapéutica alguna.

OBJETIVO: describir el impacto en la demora del proceso clínico-administrativo que siguen los pacientes hasta obtener el diagnóstico de síndrome de apnea/hipopnea obstructiva del sueño, determinar su duración y estimar su costo.

METODOS: se realizó un estudio descriptivo multicéntrico en tres instituciones de salud colombianas a través de una encuesta que indagó aspectos demográficos, clínica y proceso para el diagnóstico.

RESULTADOS: Se encuestaron 149 pacientes. Se encontró que los pacientes requerían en promedio 5,3 años de consultas y práctica de exámenes paraclínicos para obtener el diagnóstico. Los costos totales de los estudios paraclínicos realizados fueron en promedio $841.677 por paciente (2,2 salarios mínimos legales vigentes).

CONCLUSIONES: se evidenció que el síndrome de apnea/hipopnea obstructiva del sueño es un problema frecuente, mal diagnosticado y por lo tanto mal tratado. Se debe capacitar tanto a los médicos generales como a los especialistas para que reconozcan oportunamente los signos y síntomas que llevan al diagnóstico (Acta Neurol Colomb 2006;22:12-24).
